The Autobiography of James T. Kirk Review

Another thank you to the guys at Titan Books who again have sent us a book to review, and this time it’s none other than the life of one Captain James Tiberius Kirk, starfleet’s greatest ever skipper.

The Autobiography of James T. Kirk chronicles the greatest Starfleet captain’s life (2233–2371), in his own words. From his boyhood on an Iowa farm, his youth spent on Tarsus IV, his time in the Starfleet Academy, his meteoric raise through the ranks of Starfleet, and his illustrious career at the helm of the Enterprise, this in-world memoir uncovers Captain Kirk in a way Star Trek fans have never seen.

Fringe – Sins of the Father Review

We recently read the latest novel to accompany the Fringe universe – Fringe – Sins of the father, and we loved it. Here’s the official logline:

In 2008, Peter Bishop is estranged from his father and running shady operations in Southeast Asia. His latest scam lands him in a life-or-death situation involving weird events beyond the ken of modern science. On the run, he finds himself pursued by strange specters of his past… and his future. The Fringe Division is summoned when the unimaginable occurs. Armed with experimental technology, special agent Olivia Dunham, “fringe” scientist Walter Bishop, and his son Peter Bishop investigate cases that lie beyond the realm of possibility.

This is a story that centres purely on Peter and Walter. Fans of the show will know the backstory here, and understand just how complicated this relationship is. We see some classic Walter/Peter tension. We also see a lot of what’s wrong with their relationship. It was interesting to watch this play out as we weren’t seeing something we’d watched before – there was enough new material to keep us readers hooked. The same applies when it came to Peter finding out that he’s from somewhere else – even though we all know where he’s from and the story behind it felt fresh here. No regurgitation at all.

Grimm – The Chopping Block Review

The kind folks at Titan Books recently sent us a copy of Grimm – The Chopping Block to review, and we loved it! John Passarella has created a story that is so masterfully written that it will have fans of the show jumping in excitement. Here’s the basics of what’s happening:

There once was a man who lived a life so strange, it had to be true. Only he could see what no one else can: the darkness inside, the real monster within. And he s the one who must stop them.

This is his calling. This is his duty. This is the life of a Grimm.

When a pile of human bones is discovered in a Portland forest, severed and stripped of flesh, homicide detectives Nick Burkhardt and Hank Griffin quickly rule out an animal attack, but suspect the killer is something other than human. Soon more skeletal remains are unearthed and tests reveal that the human bones were cooked before burial. As the body count increases, Nick, Hank and reformed Blutbad Monroe must track down a Wesen with a taste for human meat, before the killer can butcher their next meal…

All the characters are well handled and come across exactly as they do in the show, but it’s not only Nick and Hank that find themselves in trouble. Monroe has his own story strand here, and it was great to see that play out on the page. In the show we only meet the Blutbad as a fully reformed vegan, a man not controlled by his blood thirst, but The Chopping Block is a different story altogether. Passarella shows us how Monroe supresses his urges and how he goes about his daily business without giving in to his inner Wesen. This was a great subplot, and it gave some backstory to one of the Ninjas favourite characters on TV.

A must read for all fans of Grimm.
